Which aspects do you think makes a person unique?

There are many characteristics that make all of us unique. Tastes are different for many of us. Personalities and values are also quite unique.

People’s preferences and tastes evolve from their upbringing to their life experiences. Music, movies, food, hobbies, and even people are unique and special to each and every one of us.

Personalities or emotional fingerprints are the most important aspects of our lives. I believe in the existential idea that we all start as a ‘Tabula Rosa’ or clean slate personality wise and they evolve over time. Good events, bad events, and traumas in our lives shape/change our personalities.

Values also stem from our upbringing and are the most difficult to change. Religion, politics, spirituality, are examples of belief systems we have.

Unique values, personalities, and preferences make us all shine in our own way as unique as a snowflake. Commonalities in these aspects are what draw us to our friends/lovers/acquaintances.

What makes you laugh?

The silliness of life. I love irony and always laugh at it. Other people’s laughter is also quite contagious. I also enjoy clever witty remarks and banter.

Lastly non sequiturs always make me laugh very hard and I often use them myself. My favorite example was one Steve Martin who used those a lot in his comedy, published in his book, Born Standing Up, “What does 1+1=?” “Fish” 😂😂🤣🤣🤣

When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was five I wanted to be a drummer. I saw Stevie Wonder on tv singing Superstition. Watching the drummer smashing that funk beat and I knew that was what I wanted to do.

So I grabbed a couple wooden spoons turned them backwards and used a couple of pots as my first drum kit. I’m sure my parents appreciated it. 🤣🤣 🥁

As a result of my passion, I was in band from age 8 until age 24 and have played in bands in elementary school, high school, and college.

I have been a member the following: Orchestras, Jazz/Big Band combos, matching bands, a percussion ensemble, some Latin Band. Since I can’t go back in time and be Hal Blaine in the Wrecking Crew I am satisfied with my limited but fun musical career.

Unfortunately, I had to pick a day job (Information Technology and Technical Writing) that was more steady but if I had to do over again I’d make a go at it as a professional musician.

What’s something most people don’t understand?

Where we all come from. All of us for the better and worse have changed and evolved through our life’s lessons. But many, are quite wrapped up in themselves, they don’t really bother to picture themselves in other people’s shoes. Perspectives need to be taken not account as they’re all different.

I feel like we are living in an age of excessive narcissism and I truly hope our society and world can rise above it and our differences or we are doomed.

We are all humans hence we are all connected I wish everyone could feel that like I do. Hence I digress so that maybe everyone can. ❤️❤️👟👟👟👟

How has technology changed your job?

This is an excellent question. Technology for lack of a better word has been my job for much or all of my 2& year career. I started out in Information Technology (IT)and worked many facets of that industry for the better part of 26 years. I continue today now as a Technical Writer, utilizing the skills that helped IT to document how-tos, operating manuals, and user guides.

Technology’s ebbs and flows has made my professional live somewhat interesting. Personally and professionally I have seen as and supported/worked in the following operating systems since their inception: DOS (Disk Operating System), Windows 3.1, Windows For Workgroups (3.11), Windows 95 OSR1, Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, NT (New Technology) 3.51, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, Windows 9, Windows 10, and Windows 11. The challenges and changes brought about with each iteration always made life interesting to say the least.

Now there’s team which I use for my professional technical writing (my day job now). Where everything is in the cloud (stored on a remote file sever accessible from anywhere provided you can login to the network and the VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunnel. The beauty of this environment is that it allows me to work from home or anywhere really.

In conclusion, I feel that technology has forced me to be eternally frosty and sharp. This has brought about many changes and the need to constantly adapt and master everything new to help others with far less patience than I have. This isn’t easy, but wouldn’t life be boring if everything stayed static? Mine would be.

How often do you say “no” to things that would interfere with your goals?

This is an excellent question. There are two answers, one for the me of the past and one for the current rendition of yours truly.

The old me had no boundaries and was a people pleaser. So I pretty much never said “no” to anyone for anything. Therefore, people took major advantage of my generosity and gifts. Many friends, colleagues, and significant others took advantage of this.

My journey and self growth have brought about significant change and improvement in me. I know my value and have firm goals and aspirations in my life that I intend to exceed. I now say “no” to many things. I have healthy boundaries which better protect me from use and abuse.

Any person or thing that doesn’t serve my happiness, wellbeing, and goals I remove from my life. 🔥🔥❤️

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?

I skill I’ve had most of my life and often wish I hadn’t is very strong empathy. This ability is a curse and a gift, I guess.

Often picking up on the emotional vibes of many people around you since childhood is no picnic.

The term ‘empath’ hasn’t been universally accepted until more recently and frankly many people either deny it’s real or fear it.

Statistics show that roughly 20 percent of the population have the s ability (10% men and 10% women split right down the middle).

This ability has shown me when people I loved were lying to me or cheating on me. Also, people’s true intentions and motives. It’s often TMI, and it’s really never happy information.

Worst of all I am a very sensitive guy (most of my life) that is not emotionally clueless or rugged (natured) like men are supposed to be according to societal type.

It’s taken many years to accept this gift and be content with who I am. The world will catch up someday (at least for parents to understand this is how I’ve been since infancy).

There are upsides to being an empath. As a writer I can dial in the emotions which makes my exhibits vivid . As a musician I also play by feel helping me fine tune the notes I create playing the right way at the right time. As a friend/lover I have helped many heal their inner wounds by helping them find the causes and answers by my instincts.

It’s my gift and burden and I know I have it for a reason and embrace it in this phase of my life.

What is your favorite type of weather?

I love storms. There’s something about a coziness of being inside while the weather rages on.

I lived in Texas for a few years back in 2014 and lived not too far from Dallas. During that brief tenure I saw some of the craziest most intense weather phenomena mostly the epic spring and summer and even winter thunderstorms out there.

Spending over 42 years in California my idea of what a storm was would require a rapid adjustment. As much of the Texas weather can outright kill you.

My best memories of Texas, where during those fierce storms, sitting on the porch at night watching the lightning for hours.

Who was your most influential teacher? Why?

Dr. Gullett was my most influential teacher. He was my high school band director and also taught elementary school music as well for a time many years.

My musicianship begs. At age 8, where Dr. Gullett taught me how to read music and play my instrument (snare drum) and really opened up that world to me. He was my high school band director and was tough as nails on me but he brought out my best.

I learned the importance of leadership and leading by example as I ran my section for 3 of my 4 years in school.

It didn’t help that my section was most infuriating to him. My name was yelled more than any other over those years. I worked hard to make our section shine and it took a while but we got there and won some competitions and the respect of our peers. we were even opening ASB assemblies with our cadences.

Being taught to work hard and respect what you do were lessons I learned from him and carried on into my life after band and high school. Also rolling with life and improvising as challenges and changes bring about the unexpected. I have thanked him many times and can never say enough about the influence in my life…

Dentist 😢

I’ve had a toothache for about 2 weeks now and I finally cannot stand it anymore so I’m at the dentist.

I do not like going to the dentist because it’s always very painful and expensive when I go.

But the daggers in my right jaw.

Little did I know they’d pull 4 teeth, put in an implant, and they I’d new a new credit line to cover all of this ($6k 😢😢😢😢)

Well I am taking control of my life and mouth one 🦷 at a time.

How Does This Work?

Life at 50+ is definitely not for the faint at heart. For those of us that are not so good at picking partners, or are a widow/widower, dating is certainly not what it used to be. I think post 50 should come with a set of warning instructions. Love is not easy to find, even at 52.
