Never been to me by Charlene.. this song reminds me of how amazing life is and helps me find gratitude in all the choices I made, good or not so good.
My Way by Elvis-For what is a man (or woman) what has he got if not him or herself. I’ve had little to no regrets and I did it my way.
Daddy come and get me-Dolly Parton.. This song was a song my daddy and I listened to after we first connected after he was out of my life for 35 years. He promised from the moment we heard this song that he would always be there for me and he would never leave me again. He died 4 years later, but he’s with me in spirit and always in my heart.
Setting the world on fire-Kenny Chesney and Pink-This song was a song for my short lived love affair with my high school sweetheart after we reconnected 20 years after graduation. Still makes me warm and fuzzy
The Fighter-Keith Urban and Carry Underwood-because this song was dedicated to me by my high school sweetheart during my divorce. It will always hold special meaning
I’ll be here for you-Michael W. Smith. This song is a song dedicated to me by a man who saved me from myself. It will forever be my special song.
1) Abby Road by the Beatles. This is my favorite album by my favorite band. There is a lot of great stuff on here especially with most of side 2 being a continuous suite of rock ‘n’ roll.
2) Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. This is an epic album with magical guitar riffs, touching stunning lyrics with obscure spoken word over the top at times, and a continuous suite of songs at are pure art. There are two types of Pink Floyd fans, The Wall, and Darkside fans and I am the latter through I do like The Wall a lot.
3) Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. Epic, sonic journey with brilliant music, orchestration, and killer vocal hooks and harmonies by the genius that is Brian Wilson. Touching powerful lyrics by Tony Asher add emotion and inflection to these works of art. One of the most influential and previously understated/underrated albums of all time. Too many high points to single out every song is magic and the instrumentals (Let’s Go Way for a While and Pet Sounds) provide many layers of Wilson’s complex orchestrations sometimes utilizing multiple bassists. And of course the wrecking crew providing all the instruments is just amazing!!!
4) The Stranger by Billy Joel. Not only does this album contain what I consider Billy’s magnum opus (Scenes from an Italian Restaurant). Also there are the touching love songs: She’s Always a Woman and Just the Way You Are. There are also the philosophical songs in The Stranger (do we really know people?) and Vienna Waits For You (learning life’s lessons and patience). The lyrical/satirical song about promiscuity (Only the Good Die Young). And the visceral opener (Moving Out Anthony’s Song) which was quite apropos for me as I am an Anthony and I worked for 7 years in a grocery store 😂😂
5) Whatever and Ever Amen by Ben Folds Five. I cannot say enough about this album as a whole. Killer hooks and pickups on the piano and bass. Brilliant harmonies by all members and some hysterical poignant lyrics. I have loved this piece of art since its release in 1997. The special editions include some previously unreleased tracks and some brilliant covers (Video Killed the Radio Star, She Don’t Use Jelly, and Theme From Dr. Pyser). If you haven’t heard these guys check them out! -aaa❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️
I do like Abby Road, with a good feeling towards all the tracks though – and please don’t gasp and cast me out for this – but, my fav is Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. I know it’s not a popular choice but its probably the most out of left field of the songs on the album.
Daddy really likes Billy Joel so I know The Stranger well from car journeys where he gets to chose some of the music or from hearing him listen to it. Totes agree on Scenes from an Italian Restaurant as utterly awesome. It took me a while to realize that it was only a single song bc he manages to change tempos and moods during it. Vienna Waits For You has continued to grow on me as I get older.
For my own choices its harder. I hope you wont feel old when I say this but albums aren’t as much a thing as they used to be. A lot of artists I know a song here and there without it being part of a piece. I think that’s kind of a shame at times as people aren’t trying to create something unique so much as snippets.
But, in no particular order and subject to my whims on any given day:
Elohim by Elohim. Probably not your sort of music but what I think you would appreciate is it includes small little snippets that would never work as songs on their own but add to the overall effect. They make all the actual songs work better by being the bits that bind them together if that makes sense. I love some of the individual songs, but these side pieces are what make this an album.
Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. One of Mommy’s favs that I inherited a love of. I can find several songs from each of her albums that I love but this was the first album I got to know, that I grew up with, so it has extra meaning to me. I think it’s partly also that there is a certain bitterness in some of the songs. Alanis Morissette is more rounded later on, here it’s a bit more spiky if that makes sense. I can identify with that bc I’m still putting up the spiky barriers.
Here Comes the Drums by The Rogue Traders. Some great songs, but this makes it bc of the title track. Daddy is a hard-nosed, serious combat arms officer. But also a bit of a nerd with somethings. To include Dr. Who. The title track is in one episode that he really likes and is fun and more than once when he has had the album on in his office or we are in the car together with it on he’ll pause the CD and we’ll recite the scene from the show that leads into it. It always makes me laugh. And I think that’s a big part of a love of music. It’s the memories it reminds us of.
The Billy Joel album (bc you mentioned him) that has The River of Dreams on it. Sorry I forget the name, but have a sneaking suspicion it may be called River of Dreams so I’ll seem like a dork. First up, River of Dreams is an awesome song. The whole album has good songs, but that one is awesome. But there is another song that Daddy used to sing to me when I was very small. Yeah, I know, military brat whose a total Daddy’s Girl. I live that stereotype! But, well it made me feel special, like he had written it for me (and, I don’t know, arranged for a major singer to include it on his album – hey, gimme a break, I was a kid back then). I still get goosebumps when I hear it. Which is weird. Like, seriously, whenever the song comes on the radio, a goose will fly down and land next to me, make a fist, and we do this fist bump thing. And the goose will flap it’s wing to make a sort of explosion effect. Very weird. 😁
Number 5 album? Not sure, something by Taylor Swift or David Bowie. It’s hard to decide.
