Lands of Death

The moon is out the stars on high

Pillars of stone reach towards the sky.

Listening softly you hear your breath

In this land of such loss and death.

In the coolness of dusk your breath is steam

Soft puffs reflecting the twilight gleam.

Thinking the lives below so long gone

Sadness so great, you barely carry on.

You say some prayers, think good thoughts

For great winners here and the have-nots.

Walking silently, by the chiseled grey stones

Contemplating, most inhabitants here, are merely bones.

Talking in your mind, no words out loud said

Reverent silence, in respect for the dead.

You should be leaving soon you know

Impending darkness, stars are beginning to show.

You say your goodbyes to loved ones at rest

You miss them dearly, they’ve finished life’s tests.

Prayers complete, you leave briskly with intention

As these places at night, bear creepy mention…
