Lady Misery

There once was a lady from town

Whose face always wore a frown.

No humor or concession

Can change her complexion.

She looks like a sad-faced clown…

I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times

This for me is definitely one of Brian Wilson’s Magnum, opus’s of a song.

He wrote the brilliant stunning, goosebump music to this song along with the brilliant lyrics by the brilliant Tony Asher.

It’s hard to pick a favorite on pet sounds because the whole album is absolutely brilliant and it’s one of the albums. I’d have with me if I was ever stranded on a desert Island.

It’s probably my number three album of all time and this song to me, expresses the troubled, genius of Brian Wilson and how he had a hard time finding those that he could relate to and could relate to him.

“ I keep lookin’ for a place to fit in

Where I can speak my mind

And I’ve been tryin’ hard to find the

people That I won’t leave behind

They say I got brains But they ain’t

doin’ me no good I wish they could”

Note, the interesting use of the theremin towards the end of the song that he’d later use on the masterpiece Good Vibrations as well.

The Wrecking Crew is present here in full force, I love this staccato eighth notes, running up and down the bass guitar by the amazing bassist Carol Kaye. And the countermelody on the keyboards and stuff is absolutely very, very different and it makes you stop and take notice and then the lyrics are amazingly poignant and heartbreaking.

The great master percussionist and my hero Hal Blaine likely playing the wood blocks in the background, which I also love by the way.

And Brian Wilson singing the lead solo alone, echoing in the cold with only the warm harmonies of himself and his colleagues in the Beach boys, providing the background melodies.

Please enjoy…

I am a Martian

I am one of a kind

Unique is the rule

No one to bind

As I’m a fool

Far from my planet

I’m all alone

I take nothing for granted

A billion miles from home

Sensitive to all that feel

But none of them feel a thing

Truly alone is my real

As I feel often loneliness’s sting

My plight is all mine

And mine all alone

Nobody to match me is a crime

That’s hurt me to the bone

I have a giant third eye

It’s my greatest power

I can feel it when you cry

Or when you’re glowing like a flower

No antennae on my head

I’m not sporting a green face

No what is ever said

I’m scorned by the human race

Being so weird makes me sad

I never do quite fit in

Many frustrations to be had

Despite the effort, I never win

So I gaze low eyes to the sky

As I sit here all alone

Ever hoping a saucer will come by

And return me to my Martian home…

Distant Star (So Far Away)

Star so far away it is blind

More than us, it left behind.

Hanging in a lonely night

If only it could shine more bright.

And not be so very far

From everything, and who we are.

So distant we can’t detect its heat

Though it would make us more complete.

If only it could know our plight

And reassure us every night.

Star, as light years away as can be

But if we use a telescope, we can see.

It isn’t as unreachable as it seems

Just like all our heartfelt dreams.

Close your eyes, relax your stare

There it is, just shining there.

So if others don’t give love, or care

Remember like that star, it’s still out there…
