Skies darken,

                    as billowy clouds

start to fill up the air.

           Whites give way to grays

then blacks with green mixed in.

The rains come in torrents, hail falls, and

winds start to pick up seemingly out of nowhere.

The sirens sound and you know it’s for real.

You pray the prayer of shame,

“Please not my city, not my street, not my house”.

You hear the sound of a freight train

                without any tracks near you.

Knowing what’s coming you enter your walk in closet and hunker down the best you can.

You hear it come and then go abruptly.

Fortunately, it missed your house and neighborhood.

Others, nearby, were not so lucky.

Losing all they’ve ever owned in 30 seconds.

The High Rope Walker

The crowd watched in breathless silence as the walker made his way across.

It was a gale, twenty-five mile an hour wind which is even stronger at his locale.

As he stands tenderly on a small wire affixed between two skyscrapers more than seventy-five stories high, each.

In his hands, a wooden stick used for balance it’s nearly twenty feet long.

This stands as his sole assistance against the wind and his minuscule walkway.

Underneath him, nothing but a large experiment in gravity, should he fall the 800 plus feet to the cold asphalt below…

The Stormy Lunes

First a trickle

Then the rain picks up

The drops dance

In the wind

With the clouds gradually darkening

Low guttural rumble

Distant at first

The storm isn’t here yet

But it’s close

I feel it

With all its potential energy

Thunder’s closer now.

Heavy rain now

Shrouded world in water’s fog

Hard to see.

A bright flash

And deafening crack of thunder

It had arrived

All rain gutters

Pour like mad with rainwater

The street floods

Small bits of

Everything wash down the avenue

As they meet

Their final destination

Down the deep storm drain

To the ocean

Wind whips violently

Tree branches snap, falling everywhere

Creating ground forests

The rain subsides

The winds die down gradually

The thunder quiets

Far brighter sky

Just as the sun reappears

The waters recede

I venture out

To clear the broken branches

Into a barrel

Clear sky now

Butterflies and birds fly by

Enjoying the warmth…
