A Small Light Turned On

I wonder if I’ve been hacked? One of my long time viewers suggested that. I did notice, that both emails have a misspelling of “automatic” as “automattic” which seems odd.

Here’s the email I got from them.

“Your account has been flagged for an excessive amount of likes and follows.

Please keep in mind our like and follow features are designed to help you keep up with your favorite blogs, give easy feedback to their authors, and nurture direct conversations. They are not to be used as a means of promoting your site through mass notifications.

As such, your ability to use the like and follow functions has been permanently disabled. This decision will not be reversed.

Thank you for understanding,

Automattic Trust & Safety”

Seem weird to you too?

  1. I get streams of likes one after the other after the other from people sometimes. There’s no way they are actually reading the posts. That’s when I assume they’re using the feature as a way to gain visibility. Unless they think that they are being supportive by liking mass quantities of my posts without reading them.😅

  2. It is two T’s. As I contacted Automattic when I flagged someone who never comments anywhere on blogs at other peoples, including my own. But just liked my comments. Some comments the person liked had no meaning to that person. (I mentioned this one time in a blog post of mine. A Chinese or Japanese profile that has a soft toy dog as it’s image.)
That person comes liking and constantly liking wherever I go. And it is obvious the person does not read before liking. The like notifications pile up that I am at risk of losing touch with people who comment and mean more to me than someone who never interacted anywhere with anyone. This same person has done it some others too. So yes. Correct spelling as I checked my email.

    • Japanese. I know the one you mean. I don’t think it’s malicious (I don’t think…). I think they are doing it as am attempt to be supportive, but I know your frustration. It completely buries my notifications.

      • I reached my limit when that person liked a thank you comment. The thank you comments had no meaning to that person than the person I was thanking. I already felt annoyed as well as stalked. I have never come across anyone before in all the years on WordPress who does what that one does. So that person is being watched since reporting.
I won’t be surprised if you have come across the one I am on about as the person as done I think when I have commented on your blog. On Laura’s and someone else’s.
But when the person came to my blog, I blocked. But I don’t know if blocking includes blocking likes.

        • I think it does not block likes, and if it’s comments on someone else’s blog, then it wouldn’t apply regardless I don’t believe.
I have definitely come across the same person. Just this morning in fact lol

This whole situation blows my mind though. People clearly spamming to promote their page and/or crappy products with a ton of links roam free, but a legitimate user gets screwed?
And taking away the ability to like and follow but not to post or comment? The approach has zero freaking logic to me.

          • Yes. That person was around my comments today on other people’s blogs. Liked three of my comments. Thankfully no more. But then I have been quiet with what’s going on away from here.

People that constantly like and nothing else consecutively that much it is obvious they are not reading, I don’t know what they get out of it than waste their time and annoy others by doing it.
And then there is Anthony who has been blocked. But why? And I shake my head. The air would go blue if I aloow it. But it’s not my place to swear here. Not on Anthony’s blog.
And I just don’t have the energy.

            • There is an irony that he’s being punished and yet, they are willing to sell us services to promote our blogs. Seems a bit hypocritical to me.
I mean, how else is one going to make a connection if you don’t get out there, post, like and comment?
The whole thing is ridiculous, unfair and silly. No sense at all.

      • Fight it Anthony. What about commenting. Can you comment now on other people’s blogs again? Cos if I remember right, you said you couldn’t comment at other people’s blogs.
